Hello Everyone, this is KDT and today were gonna be seeing about an important and dangerous virus in Cyber Crime.
It is RansomWare
To cover all the details and Characters of Ransomware, im gonna be dividing it into several sub Headings. So, lets get started.
There is also a video walkthrough of this Article. If you prefer it, you can check it out.
Ransomware is a dangerous malware which is used in attacking the Victims in many Cyber Attacks. It is a unique Malware because once it is entered into the victim’s Machine, there’s no way or very less possibility of removing it without any cost.
Once Ransomware got into the Victim’s machine it encrypts all the documents and files in it and asks for money payment for each file to get released. If we didn’t pay the amount specified by the Malware, it will delete all the files in our system.
RANSOMWARE ATTACK METHOD
Once Ransomware gets into your device, it searches for all the files, folders and documents in your device and it also searches the shared files you had synced with cloud based servers and individually encrypts them all.
Once it has finished all the Encryption work, a Ransom note appears in your screen. See the Screenshot Reference below.
Also when a Ransomware attacks happen, when you may try to open your files, you may notice that some of them now have weird extensions. Others may have weird icons. When you try to open them, you’ll get an error message. No matter what you try to do, you won’t be able to get the file to open.
If it’s a shared file, it is even worse that any recipient you shared also may not be able to open the file or do any work with that file.
SOLUTION FOR RANSOMWARE ATTACK
There are only two ways you can get your files back and literally there are no other possibilities.
- Try restoring from backup
- Pay the Ransom Amount
Restoring from backup is pretty easy and the best solution to Ransomware attacks. If you don’t have a backup, then your’e in a trouble. You have to pay the Ransom Amount the Malware asks.
The ransomware amount varies, nowadays its a few hundred bucks. But there are also cases seen by the FBI that a ransomware asks about $5000 dollars.
Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to crack the encryption and if that’s the case, then you might be in a situation to pay the Ransom Amount. According to a survey of 300 experts, 19% of victims that paid the ransom didn’t get their files back.
Employee education: Special training that teaches the employees about Ransomware and about the methods such as phishing and also about legitimate sources
Spam filters & firewalls: A strong filtering system that prevents the majority of malware Emails from reaching the inboxes.
Application restrictions: Strict controls over the actions performed by the Applications.
Anti-malware software: Commercial Anti-Virus software that can detect the Ransom breach with its signature.
NONE OF THE OS ARE SAFE
Just because those industries are taking the pain of Ransomware attacks, that doesn’t mean that Ransom doesn’t attack us. It does not matter what Operating System we use.
Any major Operating Systems like Windows, OS X(Mac), Linux and Android will not secure you 100% from Ransom Attacks until it is patched and up to date. Although, it is patched there are several possibilities that it may get infected.
A survey of 1,700 managed-service providers states the percentage of Ransom attacks on each OS:
- Windows: 100%
- MAC: 3%
- Linux: 3%
- Android: 3%
So I conclude by saying that, it is in our hands and it’s our Responsibility to stay safe from Ransom and many Cyber Threats. We need to follow the steps which I have given in the Safety Precautions heading.
We have nothing to do after we got infected, as we can’t escape from it, so the best way is to stay safe.
